Settled in 1849 by the Dorsey brothers, John and William, the city was named by John's wife, Patsy, for the hero of the 19th-century song "[[Pastoral Elegy]]" (who was himself named for a lovesick shepherd in [[Virgil]]'s ''[[Eclogues]]''). The racial makeup of the city was 90.46% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 9.01% [[African American (U.S. Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.13% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.40% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.40% of the population.
