Comanche is located in what was once the famous Louisiana Purchase, a part of which was later in 1855 designated Indian Territory and set aside for the Five Civilized Tribes. Comanche then became part of the Chickasaw Nation and was identified as Comanche, Indian Territory, until statehood in 1907. The city has had a series of names. The first settlers lived north of the present site and called the settlement Tucker. With the coming of the Rock Island Railroad in 1892, Indian landowner Johnny D. Wilson gave the city its present site on the railroad, and the Tucker post office was moved here in 1893. Many had wanted to call it Wilson Town, and some called it Border Queen because of the annual large celebrations, carnivals, bands, and Indian activities. Mr. Wilson, however, insisted it be named Comanche because of the Comanche Indians who roamed here. Comanche was incorporated November 23, 1898, and began its progress located about 2 mi east of present-day Comanche. The cattle were driven from Texas, through Indian Territory to Kansas for shipment east. Parts of this historic trail can still be clearly seen today. ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 sqmi, all land. ==Climate== {{Weather box |location = Comanche, Oklahoma |single line = Y |Jan record high F = |Feb record high F = |Mar record high F = |Apr record high F = |May record high F = |Jun record high F = |Jul record high F = |Aug record high F = |Sep record high F = |Oct record high F = |Nov record high F = |Dec record high F = |year record high F= |Jan high F = 49.3 |Feb high F = 54.8 |Mar high F = 64.2 |Apr high F = 74.1 |May high F = 81.3 |Jun high F = 88.9 |Jul high F = 94.9 |Aug high F = 94.1 |Sep high F = 85.5 |Oct high F = 75.4 |Nov high F = 63.1 |Dec high F = 52.8 |year high F= 73.2 |Jan low F = 25.6 |Feb low F = 30.6 |Mar low F = 39.4 |Apr low F = 50.8 |May low F = 58.7 |Jun low F = 66.9 |Jul low F = 71.3 |Aug low F = 70.1 |Sep low F = 62.8 |Oct low F = 50.9 |Nov low F = 39.7 |Dec low F = 29.9 |year low F= 49.7 |Jan record low F = |Feb record low F = |Mar record low F = |Apr record low F = |May record low F = |Jun record low F = |Jul record low F = |Aug record low F = |Sep record low F = |Oct record low F = |Nov record low F = |Dec record low F = |year record low F= |Jan precipitation inch = 1.2 |Feb precipitation inch = 1.7 |Mar precipitation inch = 2.6 |Apr precipitation inch = 3 |May precipitation inch = 5.1 |Jun precipitation inch = 4 |Jul precipitation inch = 2.3 |Aug precipitation inch = 2.4 |Sep precipitation inch = 4.4 |Oct precipitation inch = 3.4 |Nov precipitation inch = 2.2 |Dec precipitation inch = 1.5 |year precipitation inch= 33.7 |Jan snow inch = |Feb snow inch = |Mar snow inch = |Apr snow inch = |May snow inch = |Jun snow inch = |Jul snow inch = |Aug snow inch = |Sep snow inch = |Oct snow inch = |Nov snow inch = |Dec snow inch = |year snow inch= <!--Average daily % humidity--> |Jan humidity= |Feb humidity= |Mar humidity= |Apr humidity= |May humidity= |Jun humidity= |Jul humidity= |Aug humidity= |Sep humidity= |Oct humidity= |Nov humidity= |Dec humidity= |year humidity= <!--Average number of rainy days--> |unit rain days= <!--If entering the average number of days, then the unit requirement should be used, because this varies between countries.
