As of the 2020 census, the town had a total population of 982.<ref name="USCensusEst2020-2021"/> The town is named after S.N. Clark, an agent of the [[Holland Land Company]].

The town is in the southwest part of Allegany County, northeast of [[Olean (city), New York|Olean]].

== History ==
The first settlers arrived around 1822. The town of Clarksville was founded in 1835, taking away part of the town of [[Cuba, New York|Cuba]].

[[New York State Route 305]] is an important north-south highway through the town.

The population density was {{convert|31.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 766 housing units at an average density of {{convert|21.1|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.34% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.17% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.26% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.35% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.00% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.17% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.70% from two or more races.  0.17% of the population were [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 447 households, out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% were non-families. 20.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 100.7 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $29,931, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $29,917 versus $20,000 for females.
