==History==
Originally called "Orange", the city was renamed Chipley in 1882 for [[William Dudley Chipley]], president of the [[Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad]] and Florida state senator from 1895 to 1897.

The city is located in the [[Florida Panhandle]] along [[Interstate 10 in Florida|Interstate 10]] and [[U.S. Route 90 in Florida|U.S. Route 90]]. U.S. Route 90 runs through the downtown area from west to east as Jackson Avenue, and leads east {{convert|10|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Cottondale, Florida|Cottondale]] and west {{convert|9|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Bonifay, Florida|Bonifay]]. Interstate 10 runs from west to east south of the city, with access from exit 120 ([[Florida State Road 77]]). I-10 leads east {{convert|86|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Tallahassee, Florida|Tallahassee]], the state capital, and west {{convert|116|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Pensacola, Florida|Pensacola]]. FL-77 is the main north–south route through the city, and leads north {{convert|12|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Graceville, Florida|Graceville]] and south {{convert|47|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Panama City, Florida|Panama City]].

The racial makeup of the city is 67.85% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 28.51% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.28% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.56% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.03% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.22% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 1.45% of the population are [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.
