The unincorporated community of '''Chase''' is the only significant population center in the township. Both the community and township were named after [[Salmon P. Chase]], the [[Chief Justice of the United States]] at the time the area was being settled in the 1860s. The community was first known as "Greendale", which was recorded through clerical error as "Green Dale". A post office was established with the name of Chase in March 1872. According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|35.6|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|35.4|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|0.2|sqmi|km2}} (0.48%) is water.

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,194 people, 427 households, and 330 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|33.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 559 housing units at an average density of {{convert|15.8|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 95.48% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.68% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.08% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.08% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.34% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.35% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.17% of the population.

There were 427 households, out of which 38.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 17.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the township the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $36,776, and the median income for a family was $39,375. Males had a median income of $29,821 versus $24,000 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the township was $14,882.  About 11.8% of families and 12.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 12.4% of those under age 18 and 20.5% of those age 65 or over.
