==Geography==
Canalou is located in northwest New Madrid County approximately one mile from the [[Stoddard County, Missouri|Stoddard County]] line. It is on Missouri Route H three miles west of [[Matthews, Missouri|Matthews]]. The [[population density]] was {{convert|1690.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 121 housing units at an average density of {{convert|605.0|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 96.15% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.18% [[Black (U.S. Census)|Black]] or [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.89% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 1.78% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.59% of the population.

There were 125 households, out of which 40.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.24.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.3% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,250, and the median income for a family was $25,417. Males had a median income of $24,792 versus $14,464 for females.
