Burwell is host to "Nebraska's Big [[Rodeo]]", an annual event usually held the last weekend of July. This has been an important event for the town's economy and has been a staple for over 80 years. Burwell was one of the initial [[National FFA Organization|FFA]] chapters of the state of Nebraska. The chapter was chartered March 1929.

The racial makeup of the city was 99.4% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.2% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.1% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.2% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.9% of the population.

There were 574 households, of which 21.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 4.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.6% were non-families. 43.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 26.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The racial makeup of the city was 98.32% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.27% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.53% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.88% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.24% of the population.
