==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|36.1|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|35.6|sqmi|km2}} are land and {{convert|0.5|sqmi|km2}}, 1.39%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/> The [[Manistee River]] flows westward through the center of the township, toward [[Lake Michigan]]. Chief Lake is along the northern border but mainly in Bear Lake Township.

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 712 people, 277 households, and 204 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|20.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 379 housing units at an average density of {{convert|10.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 97.33% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.12% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.28% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.28% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.98% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.56% of the population.

There were 277 households, out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% were non-families. 22.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the township the population was spread out, with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $40,380, and the median income for a family was $46,528. Males had a median income of $41,528 versus $21,012 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the township was $17,286.  About 4.5% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 11.6% of those age 65 or over.
