Branson is located approximately 35 miles east of Trinidad, Colorado, on State Highway 389, in the Great Plains, as well in the Black Mesa area, the town is surrounded by mesa. It is a ranching community today. Farming in the area was severely impacted by the Dust Bowl. ==History== Branson was first known as Wilson, or Wilson Switch; then as Coloflats. The Coloflats, Colorado, post office opened on August 19, 1915, and the name was changed to Branson on July 30, 1918. The town was named for Josiah F. Branson (1867-1944) who platted the town on his land. The Town of Branson was incorporated on March 26, 1921. Branson is located north of a break in the mesas which separate Southeast Colorado from Northeast New Mexico, the route of a minor branch of the Santa Fe Trail. It was founded near a switch, Wilson Switch, of the Denver, Texas, and Fort Worth Railroad, later merged into the Colorado and Southern Railway, a predecessor of today's Burlington Northern Santa Fe. A depot was built in 1918. Despite being unsuitable for farming, many homesteaders attempted dryland farming in the early 20th century. In good years there were bountiful harvests of grain and in the 1920s the town boasted 1000 people and 3 grain elevators as well as facilities such as a bank and a newspaper. After the drought and Dust Bowl of the 1930s population decreased rapidly as the economy turned from farming to ranching. ==Geography== At the 2020 United States census, the town had a total area of 0.634 km2, all of it land. ==Climate== {{Weather box |location = Branson, Colorado (Elevation 6,257ft) |single line = Y |collapsed = Yes |Jan record high F = 72 |Feb record high F = 74 |Mar record high F = 83 |Apr record high F = 86 |May record high F = 92 |Jun record high F = 99 |Jul record high F = 100 |Aug record high F = 97 |Sep record high F = 95 |Oct record high F = 86 |Nov record high F = 78 |Dec record high F = 78 |year record high F= 100 |Jan high F = 45.8 |Feb high F = 47.6 |Mar high F = 52.5 |Apr high F = 62.8 |May high F = 71.7 |Jun high F = 81.8 |Jul high F = 86.4 |Aug high F = 84.5 |Sep high F = 78.1 |Oct high F = 67.0 |Nov high F = 55.0 |Dec high F = 47.2 |year high F = 65.0 |Jan low F = 21.0 |Feb low F = 22.2 |Mar low F = 25.3 |Apr low F = 35.4 |May low F = 44.6 |Jun low F = 53.9 |Jul low F = 59.1 |Aug low F = 58.1 |Sep low F = 50.7 |Oct low F = 40.4 |Nov low F = 29.0 |Dec low F = 23.1 |year low F = 38.6 |Jan record low F = β25 |Feb record low F = β15 |Mar record low F = β10 |Apr record low F = 5 |May record low F = 19 |Jun record low F = 28 |Jul record low F = 40 |Aug record low F = 41 |Sep record low F = 25 |Oct record low F = 7 |Nov record low F = β8 |Dec record low F = β9 |year record low F= β25 |precipitation color = green |Jan precipitation inch = 0.44 |Feb precipitation inch = 0.64 |Mar precipitation inch = 0.93 |Apr precipitation inch = 1.71 |May precipitation inch = 2.37 |Jun precipitation inch = 1.28 |Jul precipitation inch = 2.68 |Aug precipitation inch = 2.86 |Sep precipitation inch = 1.46 |Oct precipitation inch = 1.01 |Nov precipitation inch = 0.74 |Dec precipitation inch = 0.60 |year precipitation inch = 16.72 |Jan snow inch = 6.8 |Feb snow inch = 6.7 |Mar snow inch = 9.9 |Apr snow inch = 5.8 |May snow inch = 0.7 |Jun snow inch = 0 |Jul snow inch = 0 |Aug snow inch = 0 |Sep snow inch = 0.2 |Oct snow inch = 1.9 |Nov snow inch = 6.4 |Dec snow inch = 8.4 |year snow inch = 46.9 |source 1 = http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?co0898. |date=December 2013 }} ==Demographics== As of the census of 2000, there were 77 people, 37 households, and 24 families residing in the town.
