== History ==
The town formed in 1820 from parts of the towns of [[Delhi, New York|Delhi]], [[Stamford, New York|Stamford]], and [[Middletown, Delaware County, New York|Middletown]]. The town's population was around 1,200 at its creation, but after reaching a peak in the 1840s, it steadily declined. The town became noted for the quality of its dairy products, especially butter, in the late 19th century.

The [[Burns Family Farm]] was listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in 2007.<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|2009a}}</ref>

==Geography==
The town has some of the highest uplands in the county. The elevation of the highest point exceeds {{convert|3340|ft}} above sea level, on an unnamed summit at the eastern corner of the town overlooking the Plattekill Mountain ski area in neighboring [[Roxbury, New York|Roxbury]].

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town of Bovina has a total area of {{convert|115.2|km2|order=flip}}, of which {{convert|114.6|km2|order=flip}} is land and {{convert|0.6|km2|order=flip|1}}, or 0.52%, is water.<ref name="Census 2010"/>

The population density was {{convert|15.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 521 housing units at an average density of {{convert|11.7|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.34% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.15% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.45% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.30% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.15% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.60% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.71% of the population.

There were 277 households, out of which 24.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.78.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 19.9% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $43,359, and the median income for a family was $46,094. Males had a median income of $30,875 versus $21,442 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $19,653.  About 3.4% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 2.6% of those age 65 or over.
