'''Bokeelia''' is an [[Unincorporated area#United States|unincorporated community]] and [[census-designated place]] (CDP) located on [[Pine Island (Lee County, Florida)|Pine Island]] in [[Lee County, Florida]], United States. As of the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]], the CDP had a population of 1,855,<ref>{{Cite web |title=Explore Census Data |url=https://data.census.gov/cedsci/profile/Bokeelia_CDP,_Florida?g=1600000US1207375 |access-date=2022-09-29 |website=data.census.gov}}</ref> up from 1,780 at the 2010 census. It is part of the [[Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area]]. Bokeelia is still home to one of Lee County's first pioneer families, the Padillas, who came by way of [[Cayo Costa]].

==Geography==
Bokeelia is located in western Lee County at {{coord|26|41|17|N|82|8|43|W|type:city}} (26.687960, -82.145249).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=United States Census Bureau|access-date=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It sits at the northern end of Pine Island and is bordered by water on three sides: [[Pine Island Sound]] to the west, [[Charlotte Harbor (estuary)|Charlotte Harbor]] to the north, and Matlacha Pass to the east. Bokeelia is bordered to the south by the unincorporated communities of [[Pineland, Florida|Pineland]] and [[Pine Island Center, Florida|Pine Island Center]].

The original settlement of Bokeelia is on Bokeelia Island, connected to Pine Island by a short bridge on Stringfellow Road (County Road 767), the main road through the community, and which ends at the town's short Main Street along Charlotte Harbor. To the south Stringfellow Road leads {{convert|7|mi|0}} to Pine Island Center, from where County Road 78 leads west to [[Cape Coral, Florida|Cape Coral]] on the mainland.

As of the census<ref name="GR2">{{cite web |url=https://www.census.gov |publisher=United States Census Bureau |access-date=2008-01-31 |title=U.S. Census website }}</ref> of 2000, there were 1,997 people, 907 households, and 631 families residing in the CDP.  The population density was {{convert|225.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,436 housing units at an average density of {{convert|162.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.05% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.25% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.05% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.30% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.85% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.50% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 12.47% of the population.

There were 907 households, out of which 16.1% had children under 18 living with them, 60.5% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.55.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 15.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 18.2% from 25 to 44, 31.9% from 45 to 64, and 28.2% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females, there were 110.2 males.  For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 112.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $36,319, and the median income for a family was $42,250. Males had a median income of $24,271 versus $28,854 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the CDP was $27,613.  About 12.4% of families and 17.6% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 25.6% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those aged 65 or over.
