The [[2020 United States census]] reported that Big River had a population of 1,084. The population density was {{convert|100.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of Big River was 76.6% [[White Americans|White]], 0.9% [[African Americans|African American]], 7.1% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 0.9% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.1% [[Pacific Islander Americans|Pacific Islander]], 3.6% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 10.8% from two or more races. [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanic or Latino]] of any race were 15.4% of the population.

The whole population lived in households. There were 550 households, out of which 14.4% included children under the age of 18, 34.7% were married-couple households, 8.7% were [[cohabitation|cohabiting]] couple households, 30.9% had a female householder with no partner present, and 25.6% had a male householder with no partner present. 40.4% of households were one person, and 23.6% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 1.97. There were 272 [[family (U.S. Census)|families]] (49.5% of all households).

The age distribution was 11.5% under the age of 18, 4.4% aged 18 to 24, 14.5% aged 25 to 44, 31.1% aged 45 to 64, and 38.5% who were 65{{nbsp}}years of age or older. The median age was 59.8{{nbsp}}years. For every 100 females, there were 101.5 males.

There were 1,014 housing units at an average density of {{convert|93.6|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}, of which 550 (54.2%) were occupied.
