The town is crossed by [[Maine State Route 3|SR 3]] and [[Maine State Route 131|SR 131]]. It is bordered by [[Morrill, Maine|Morrill]] on the north, [[Belfast, Maine|Belfast]] on the east, [[Northport, Maine|Northport]] on the southeast, [[Lincolnville, Maine|Lincolnville]] on the south and [[Searsmont, Maine|Searsmont]] on the west.

The [[population density]] was {{convert|69.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 462 housing units at an average density of {{convert|33.9|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the town was 97.0% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.2% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.3% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.3% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.8% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 1.3% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.8% of the population.

There were 405 households, of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.8% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.87.

The median age in the town was 44.8 years. 20.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.8% were from 25 to 44; 32.2% were from 45 to 64; and 17.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 47.6% male and 52.4% female.

The population density was {{convert|60.3|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 393 housing units at an average density of {{convert|28.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.66% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.49% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 0.85% from two or more races.

There were 336 households, out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.79.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.5% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $29,013, and the median income for a family was $36,875. Males had a median income of $25,197 versus $24,327 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $14,942.  About 6.3% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 10.3% of those under age 18 and 13.7% of those age 65 or over.
