According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|45.69|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|39.57|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|6.12|sqmi|km2}} (13.48%) is water. The city of [[Petoskey, Michigan|Petoskey]] is northeast of the township, and the township has a coastline along [[Little Traverse Bay]] with which [[Petoskey State Park]] is located.

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 5,269 people, 2,001 households, and 1,416 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|133.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 2,969 housing units at an average density of {{convert|75.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 96.32% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.09% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.73% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.59% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.02% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.23% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.02% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.02% of the population.

There were 2,001 households, out of which 36.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the township the population was spread out, with 27.5% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.6 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $44,129, and the median income for a family was $52,262. Males had a median income of $36,483 versus $27,206 for females. About 3.1% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those age 65 or over.
