The Village of Baxter Estates was incorporated in 1931.<ref name=":81">{{Cite book|last=Winsche|first=Richard|title=The History of Nassau County Community Place-Names|date=October 1, 1999|publisher=Empire State Books|isbn=978-1557871541|location=[[Interlaken, New York]]}}</ref> Baxter Estates owes much of its history to the [[homestead (buildings)|homestead]] settlement of "Cow Neck" built in 1673 by John Betts and Robert Hutchings, which still stands on its original site at the corner of Central Drive and Shore Road, overlooking [[Manhasset Bay]]. This property was purchased around 1741 by Oliver Baxter, and maps of the time show that an entire [[wigwam]] village, belonging to the [[Matinecock (tribe)|Matinecock]] Indians, may have been located on Baxter's land.

The Baxters, who were shipbuilders, [[whaling|whalers]] and sea captains, retained the property until the 19th century. [[Hessian (soldiers)|Hessian troops]] were quartered in the Baxter House during the [[American Revolutionary War|Revolutionary War]], and in 1895 the first library of Port Washington met in the parlor of the Baxter House. The residence was designated as a historic building. In the 2010s, the owner of the home, Sabrina Wu, was in the process of submitting plans to demolish the landmarked home when a massive blaze broke out, heavily damaging the home on February 5, 2017.<ref name=":2">{{Cite news |last=Barron |first=James |date=February 8, 2017 |title=Something Rotten in East Egg? The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.8% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older.
