Batesville is one of two [[county seat]]s which the legislature established for Panola County, related to a longstanding rivalry between towns on either side of the [[Tallahatchie River]]; the other is [[Sardis, Mississippi|Sardis]], located north of the river.

The racial makeup of the city was 56.43% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 41.88% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.06% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.38% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.04% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.82% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.39% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.60% of the population.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,875, and the median income for a family was $38,849. Males had a median income of $30,998 versus $22,029 for females.
