==History==
The Town of Barre /ˈbæri/ was founded in 1818 from part of the [[Gaines, New York|Town of Gaines]].  The town was named after the birthplace of an early settler.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|55.1|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|55.1|sqmi|km2}} is land and 0.02% is water.

The southern boundary is shared with the [[Elba (town), New York|Towns of Elba and Oakfield]] in [[Genesee County, New York|Genesee County]].

[[New York State Route 98]] is a major roadway that runs north-south through the town and intersects [[New York State Route 31A]] near the northern boundary.

The population density was {{convert|38.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 772 housing units at an average density of {{convert|14.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.74% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.52% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.28% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.09% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.09% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.66% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.61% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.37% of the population.

There were 739 households, out of which 38.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% were non-families. 16.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $44,545, and the median income for a family was $47,411. Males had a median income of $32,284 versus $21,193 for females.
