The town was named for George Bancroft, a coal mine operator. The [[population density]] was {{convert|4192.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 256 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1828.6|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the town was 98.6% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.2% [[Race (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.2% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 1.0% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.7% of the population.

The racial makeup of the town was 100.00% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]].

There were 159 households, out of which 24.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.75.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $28,833, and the median income for a family was $30,313. Males had a median income of $35,417 versus $20,417 for females.
