{{Short description|Designs of Austrian currency}} '''Austrian euro coins''' have a unique design for each denomination, with a common theme for each of the three series of coins. The minor coins feature Austrian [[flower]]s, the middle coins examples of [[architecture]] from [[Austria]]'s capital, [[Vienna]], and the two major coins famous Austrians. All designs are by the hand of Josef Kaiser and also include the [[European symbols|12 stars of the EU]], [[Flag of Austria]] and the year of imprint. ==Austrian euro design== Prior to 2008, the old common side showing national borders was used, but from the 2008 coins use the new common side without borders. For [[Euro coins#Depiction of euro coinage - Reverse side|images of the common side]] and a detailed description of the coins, see [[euro coins]]. Austria is the only country which uses the Latin alphabet and yet, repeats the denomination on the national side of the coins, thus not adhering to the rule. From 2017 (5 cent coins) and 2018 (2 and 1 cent coins) onwards, the design of the national side has been slightly altered, decreasing the thickness and increasing the amount of [[hatching (heraldry)|hatching]] representing the red fields of the Austrian flag.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces59.html|title = 5 Euro Cent, Austria}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces58.html|title = 2 Euro Cent, Austria}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces57.html|title = 1 Euro Cent, Austria}}</ref> {{Coin image box 8 singles | header = Depiction of Austrian euro coinage <nowiki>|</nowiki> Obverse side | column_1_width = 150 | column_2_width = 167 | column_3_width = 156 | denom_1 = € 0.01 | denom_2 = € 0.02 | denom_3 = € 0.05 | image_1 = [[File:Austria one cent coin.jpg|150px]] | image_2 = [[File:Eurocoin.at.002.gif|150px|]] | image_3 = [[File:Eurocoin.at.005.gif|150px|]] | caption_1 = An [[Alps|Alpine]] [[Gentiana acaulis|gentian]] as a symbol of Austria's part in developing [[European Commissioner for the Environment|EU environmental policy]]. | caption_2 = An [[Alps|Alpine]] [[Leontopodium alpinum|edelweiss]] as a symbol of Austria's part in developing [[European Commissioner for the Environment|EU environmental policy]]. | caption_3 = An [[Alps|Alpine]] [[Primula angustifolia|primrose]] as a symbol of Austria's part in developing [[European Commissioner for the Environment|EU environmental policy]]. | denom_4 = € 0.10 | denom_5 = € 0.20 | denom_6 = € 0.50 | image_4 = [[File:Eurocoin.at.010.gif|150px|]] | image_5 = [[File:Eurocoin.at.020.gif|150px|]] | image_6 = [[File:50 Cent, Austria.jpg|150px|]] | caption_4 = [[St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna|St. Stephen's Cathedral]], the epitome of [[Vienna|Viennese]] [[Gothic architecture]] dating to 1160. | caption_5 = [[Belvedere (palace)|Belvedere Palace]], an example of [[Baroque]] architecture, symbolizing national freedom and sovereignty. | caption_6 = [[Secession Building]] within a circle, symbolising the birth of [[Art Nouveau]] and a new age in the country. | denom_7 = € 1.00 | denom_8 = € 2.00 | header_9 = € 2 Coin Edge | image_7 = [[File:Eurocoin.at.100.gif|150px|]] | image_8 =[[File:Austria two Euro coin.jpg|150px]] | box_9 = [[File:2€ edge Austria.png|150px]] | caption_7 = [[Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart]] (with his [[signature]]), a famous Austrian composer, in reference to the idea of [[Austria]] as a "land of music". | caption_8 = [[Bertha von Suttner]], a radical Austrian pacifist and [[Nobel Peace Prize]] winner, as a symbol of Austria's efforts to support peace. }} ==Circulating Mintage quantities== The following table shows the mintage quantity for all Austrian euro coins, per denomination, per year.<ref>{{cite web |date=2024-01-29 |title=Mintage quantities of the euro coins |url=https://www.euro-coins.info/info/mintage/austria.html |access-date=2024-02-05 |publisher=Euro-Coins.Info}}</ref> {|class="wikitable" style="font-size:100%; text-align:right" ! Their face value range from 5 euro to 100 euro. This is mainly done as a legacy of old national practice of minting [[Gold coin|gold]] and [[Silver coin|silver]] coins. These coins are not really intended to be used as means of payment, so generally they do not circulate. <gallery> File:2006 Austria 50 Euro Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart front.jpg|Gold, 50 euro, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (2006) File:2006 Austria 25 Euro European Satellite Navigation front.jpg|Silver and niobium, 25 euro, European Satellite Navigation (2006) File:2006 Austria 20 Euro The Austrian Merchant Navy back.jpg|Silver, 20 euro, The Austrian Merchant Navy (2006) </gallery> ==References== {{reflist}} ==External links== {{Portal|Austria|Money|Numismatics}} {{Commons category|Euro coins of Austria}} *[https://www.ecb.europa.eu/euro/coins/html/at.en.html European Central Bank – Austria] * [https://web.archive.org/web/20091219185017/http://oenb.at/ Oesterreichische National Bank (Austrian Central Bank)] * [http://austrian-mint.at The Austrian Mint] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140128023429/http://www.austrian-mint.at/ |date=2014-01-28 }} * [https://euro-mint.com/austria-euro-coins-minted/ Austrian euro coins and commemorative 2€ coins] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210802180200/https://euro-mint.com/austria-euro-coins-minted/ |date=2021-08-02 }} {{Euro topics}} [[Category:Euro coins by issuing country]] [[Category:Currencies of Austria|Euro coins]] [[Category:Austria and the European Union|Euro]]
