Augusta is located in northern Lewis and Clark County on the north side of Elk Creek (or the South Fork of the Sun River), which flows out of the [[Lewis and Clark Range]] to the southwest and leads northeast to the [[Sun River]], part of the [[Missouri River]] watershed.

As of the 2020 census,<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://data.census.gov/cedsci/profile?g=1600000US3003025|title=Explore Census Data}}</ref> there were 316 people, and 142 households in the CDP.  There were 205 housing units (161 occupied).  25.2% of people were under 18 and 23.3% were 65 and over.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov |publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]] |accessdate=January 31, 2008 |title=U.S. Census website }}</ref> of 2000, there were 284 people, 142 households, and 83 families residing in the CDP. The population density was {{convert|509.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 193 housing units at an average density of {{convert|346.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.61% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 2.46% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.41% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 3.52% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.76% of the population.

There were 142 households, out of which 19.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% were non-families. 38.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.00 and the average family size was 2.63.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 19.4% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 16.9% from 25 to 44, 33.5% from 45 to 64, and 26.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females, there were 104.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 112.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $24,688, and the median income for a family was $30,956. Males had a median income of $23,125 versus $15,536 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the CDP was $14,608. About 9.6% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 27.5% of those under the age of eighteen and 6.1% of those 65 or over.

[[U.S. Route 287#Montana|U.S. Route 287]] passes through Augusta as the northern part of its Main Street, and leads north {{convert|26|mi}} to its northern terminus at [[Choteau, Montana|Choteau]] and south {{convert|38|mi}} to [[Interstate 15 in Montana|Interstate 15]] near [[Wolf Creek, Montana|Wolf Creek]]. [[Helena, Montana|Helena]], the state capital, is {{convert|76|mi}} south of Augusta via US 287 and I-15. [[Montana Highway 21]] leads east from Augusta {{convert|22|mi}} to [[Simms, Montana|Simms]] and is the first in a series of highways that lead east {{convert|54|mi}} to [[Great Falls, Montana|Great Falls]].
