A year before that, in the Spring, a general store was constructed, and afterward a newspaper, the first church and the post office were established. A one-room high school was also built in 1914, expanding to two rooms in 1920. In 1916 the Arthur State Bank was founded. Into the 1920s, Arthur continued to be built. The town got electricity in 1926, though most of the county would not have it until the early 1950s. Then in 1932, the Great Depression struck Arthur, closing its bank, which was not replaced until 1939 with the Arthur County Co-op Credit Association. Following WWII, in 1950 construction of a new, large and modern highschool was completed. A new courthouse was built in 1960-1961. In 1980, the census population was 125. ===Historic sites=== Two sites in Arthur are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Pilgrim Holiness Church was built in 1928 out of straw bales, in response to the region's dearth of trees or construction sod. The First Arthur County Courthouse and Jail complex was built in 1914-15; the courthouse is billed as the smallest ever built in the United States. Both sites are now maintained by the Arthur County Historical Society. ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.31 sqmi, all land. ===Climate=== Arthur has a borderline humid continental climate (Köppen Dfa/Dwa) just wet enough to avoid being classed as a cool semi-arid climate (BSk). Like most of the High Plains, winters vary from frigid due to incursions of Arctic air, to an average of six afternoons between December and February of 60 F or higher during the afternoon due to chinook winds off the Rocky Mountains. In contrast, 18.2 mornings below 0 F can be expected each winter, alongside 176.5 mornings below freezing and 38.6 afternoons that do not top freezing. Snowfall is moderate in winter due to dryness: the median between 1971 and 2000 being 24.0 in and no day having median snow cover over 3 in. Spring warms up steadily but erratically: although the first afternoon over 70 F can be expected on March 13, the last morning below freezing is not expected until May 14, and the first fall morning below freezing can be expected on September 26, giving a frost-free season of only 134 days. Most precipitation falls as rain from late spring and summer thunderstorms: the wettest month on record is June 2014 with 8.89 in and the wettest calendar year 2009 with 28.56 in, whilst the driest year on record has been 1931 with 9.02 in. The wettest day on record has been September 4, 1937, with 3.58 in. During dry spells with the upper subtropical ridge is pushed northwards, heatwaves and droughts can occur: 113 F was recorded during the infamous 1936 heat wave, when Arthur averaged 98.6 F as monthly maximum; in contrast, the wet month of July 1958 had an average maximum of only 79.8 F. {{Weather box |location = Arthur, Nebraska (1971–2000; extremes since 1929) |single line = Y |Jan record high F = 72 |Feb record high F = 78 |Mar record high F = 86 |Apr record high F = 93 |May record high F = 99 |Jun record high F = 105 |Jul record high F = 113 |Aug record high F = 109 |Sep record high F = 105 |Oct record high F = 91 |Nov record high F = 80 |Dec record high F = 75 |year record high F = |Jan high F = 35.0 |Feb high F = 41.2 |Mar high F = 49.2 |Apr high F = 59.4 |May high F = 69.3 |Jun high F = 79.8 |Jul high F = 86.6 |Aug high F = 84.8 |Sep high F = 75.6 |Oct high F = 63.4 |Nov high F = 46.6 |Dec high F = 37.8 |year high F = 60.7 |Jan mean F = 23.1 |Feb mean F = 28.8 |Mar mean F = 36.7 |Apr mean F = 46.8 |May mean F = 57.2 |Jun mean F = 67.1 |Jul mean F = 73.3 |Aug mean F = 71.5 |Sep mean F = 61.6 |Oct mean F = 48.8 |Nov mean F = 34.3 |Dec mean F = 25.7 |year mean F = 47.9 |Jan low F = 11.2 |Feb low F = 16.4 |Mar low F = 24.1 |Apr low F = 34.1 |May low F = 45.1 |Jun low F = 54.3 |Jul low F = 59.9 |Aug low F = 58.1 |Sep low F = 47.5 |Oct low F = 34.1 |Nov low F = 21.9 |Dec low F = 13.6 |year low F = |Jan record low F = −35 |Feb record low F = −30 |Mar record low F = −28 |Apr record low F = −9 |May record low F = 14 |Jun record low F = 29 |Jul record low F = 37 |Aug record low F = 35 |Sep record low F = 14 |Oct record low F = −1 |Nov record low F = −19 |Dec record low F = −33 |year record low F = −35 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 0.34 |Feb precipitation inch = 0.40 |Mar precipitation inch = 1.16 |Apr precipitation inch = 1.87 |May precipitation inch = 3.34 |Jun precipitation inch = 2.66 |Jul precipitation inch = 3.16 |Aug precipitation inch = 1.84 |Sep precipitation inch = 1.71 |Oct precipitation inch = 1.12 |Nov precipitation inch = 0.69 |Dec precipitation inch = 0.36 |Jan snow inch = 5.3 |Feb snow inch = 4.8 |Mar snow inch = 8.0 |Apr snow inch = 3.9 |May snow inch = 0.3 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.4 |Oct snow inch = 1.0 |Nov snow inch = 5.2 |Dec snow inch = 4.8 |Jan precipitation days = 2.5 |Feb precipitation days = 2.6 |Mar precipitation days = 4.5 |Apr precipitation days = 5.8 |May precipitation days = 8.5 |Jun precipitation days = 8.2 |Jul precipitation days = 7.5 |Aug precipitation days = 6.2 |Sep precipitation days = 5.5 |Oct precipitation days = 3.8 |Nov precipitation days = 3.0 |Dec precipitation days = 2.5 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 inch |Jan snow days = 2.5 |Feb snow days = 2.3 |Mar snow days = 3.3 |Apr snow days = 1.6 |May snow days = trace |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.1 |Oct snow days = 0.5 |Nov snow days = 2.0 |Dec snow days = 2.5 |year snow days = 14.8 |unit snow days = 0.1 inch |source 1 = National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration |source 2 = National Weather Service North Platte, Nebraska (extremes)}} ==Demographics== ===2010 census=== As of the census of 2010, there were 117 people, 61 households, and 35 families residing in the village.
