The town was established between 1848 and 1849 by [[Joseph Watt (pioneer)|Joseph]] and [[Ahio S. Watt]], two brothers who had immigrated to Oregon over the [[Oregon Trail]].<ref name=Oregon>Corning, Howard M. ''Dictionary of Oregon History''. The [[population density]] was {{convert|2690.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 574 housing units at an average density of {{convert|956.7|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 83.9% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.7% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 2.5% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.4% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.2% [[Race (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 8.6% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 3.7% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 15.5% of the population.

The median age in the city was 31.9 years. 31.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29.4% were from 25 to 44; 23% were from 45 to 64; and 8.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.1% male and 49.9% female.

There were 495 housing units at an average density of {{convert|824.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the city was 90.73% White, 0.14% African American, 1.42% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 5.01% from other races, and 1.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.50% of the population.

There were 471 households, out of which 45.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.6% were non-families. 15.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.42.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $40,556, and the median income for a family was $42,375. Males had a median income of $30,417 versus $25,662 for females.
