==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|56.9|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|52.9|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|4.0|sqmi|km2}} (7.05%) is water.

The civil township comprises most of [[survey township]]s 14 and 15 north of range 8 east. [[Section (United States land surveying)|Section]] 1 of T14N and section 36 of T15N have been attached to [[Columbia Township, Tuscola County, Michigan|Columbia Township]], which is adjacent to the east of Akron Township. These sections surround the village of [[Unionville, Michigan|Unionville]], which also incorporates smaller portions of both sections.

Survey township 15N, on the shores of [[Saginaw Bay]], is a partial township consisting of thirteen full {{convert|1|sqmi|km2}} sections and eleven partial sections, with the remainder lying under water.

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,589 people, 602 households, and 441 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|30.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 767 housing units at an average density of 14.5 per square mile (5.6/km{{sup|2}}).  The racial makeup of the township was 95.85% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.19% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.76% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.19% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.76% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.26% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 4.59% of the population.

There were 602 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 23.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the township the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $36,891, and the median income for a family was $43,056. Males had a median income of $32,326 versus $21,548 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the township was $16,487.  About 6.2% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 12.9% of those under age 18 and 14.3% of those age 65 or over.
