Williams, she said that {{blockquote|It seems to me advisable to modify the orthography of the old servant Joseph's speeches; for though, as it stands, it exactly renders the Yorkshire dialect to a Yorkshire ear, yet I am sure Southerns must find it unintelligible; and thus one of the most graphic characters in the book is lost on them.<ref>Literature Network » [[Elizabeth Gaskell]] » ''[http://www.online-literature.com/elizabeth_gaskell/charlotte_bronte/24/ The Life of Charlotte Bronte]'' » Chapter 24</ref>}} Irene Wiltshire, in an essay on dialect and speech, examines some of the changes Charlotte made.<ref name=Wiltshire2005>{{cite journal |url=http://campuses.fortbendisd.com/campuses/documents/teacher/2009/teacher_20090122_1239_3.pdf |first=Irene |last=Wiltshire |title=Speech in Wuthering Heights: Joseph's Dialect and Charlotte's Emendations |journal=Brontë Studies |volume=30 |date=March 2005 |pages=19–29 |doi=10.1179/147489304x18821 |s2cid=162093218 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131202234803/http://campuses.fortbendisd.com/campuses/documents/teacher/2009/teacher_20090122_1239_3.pdf |archive-date=2 December 2013 }}</ref>
