===2000 census===
As of the [[census]] of 2000, there were 3,613 people, 1,636 households, and 953 families residing in the city.  The population density was {{convert|1,120.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,631 housing units at an average density of {{convert|505.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the city was 98.06% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.06% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.66% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.11% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.08% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.02% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] people of any race were 0.61% of the population. 19.4% were of [[Norwegians|Norwegian]], 18.0% [[Swedish people|Swedish]], 12.2% [[Germans|German]], 9.6% [[Finns|Finnish]], 8.0% [[Irish people|Irish]] and 5.7% [[English people|English]] ancestry.

There were 1,523 households, out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.0% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.9 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,708, and the median income for a family was $47,113. Males had a median income of $39,712 versus $29,076 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $19,793.  About 7.2% of families and 9.5% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 15.7% of those under age 18 and 4.3% of those age 65 or over.
