Tonga has a [[tropical rainforest climate]] ([[Köppen climate classification|''Af'']]) with a distinct warm period (December–April), during which the temperatures rise above {{convert|32|°C|°F|1}}, and a cooler period (May–November), with temperatures rarely rising above {{convert|27|°C|°F|1}}. The temperature and rainfall range from {{convert|23|C|F|1}} and {{convert|1700|mm|in|1|abbr=on}} on Tongatapu in the south to {{convert|27|C|F|1}} and {{convert|2970|mm|in|1|abbr=on}} on the more northerly islands closer to the Equator.

The highest temperature recorded in Tonga was {{convert|35|C|F}} on 11 February 1979 in Vava'u. The coldest temperature recorded in Tonga was {{convert|8.7|C|F}} on 8 September 1994 in Fua'amotu.
