Certain varieties of snails, notably the family [[Muricidae]], produce a secretion that is a color-fast [[natural dye]]. The ancient [[Tyrian purple]] was made in this way as were other purple and blue dyes.<ref>{{cite journal |last=Ziderman |first=I.
