After handily winning reelection as Labor Party leader [[1980 Israeli Labor Party leadership election|in 1980]] (defeating a challenge from Rabin, who was attempting a comeback to the leadership),<ref name="Kenig"/> Peres led his party to another, narrower, loss in the [[1981 Israeli legislative election|1981 elections]].
