==Smoking bans== Concerns about the effects of cigarette smoke inhalation first surfaced in the 1950s and ultimately led many countries to ban or restrict smoking in specific settings, such as pubs and restaurants. Early in 2004, [[Republic of Ireland|Ireland]] became the first country in the world to ban smoking in all enclosed public areas. Scotland was the first UK nation to introduce a [[Smoking ban#United Kingdom|ban on indoor smoking]] in March 2006, followed by the rest of the UK in 2007.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/ban-on-smoking-in-pubs-to-come-into-force-on-1-july-426568.html |title=Ban on smoking in pubs to come into force on 1 July |work=The Independent |access-date=10 July 2008 |last=Langton |first=David |location=London |date=1 December 2006 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090528013000/http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/ban-on-smoking-in-pubs-to-come-into-force-on-1-july-426568.html |archive-date=28 May 2009}}</ref> Australia introduced a similar ban in 2006 and now has some of the world's toughest anti-smoking laws, with some territories having also banned smoking in outside public areas.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-32958975#:~:text=Ireland&text=Ireland%20was%20the%20first%20country,copycat%20laws%20across%20the%20globe. |title=Smoking bans: How they vary around the world |work=The BBC |access-date=29 May 2021 |last=Kelsey |first=Rick |location=online |date=1 June 2015 }}</ref> Some publicans raised concerns, prior to the implementation of restrictions, that a smoking ban would have a negative impact on sales.<ref>{{cite news |url = https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1553459/Hundreds-of-pubs-to-flout-smoking-ban.html |title = Hundreds of pubs to flout smoking ban |work = The Daily Telegraph |access-date = 21 July 2009 |location = London |first1 = Adam |last1 = Lusher |first2 = Miles |last2 = Goslett |date = 3 June 2007 |url-status = live |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20090713014536/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1553459/Hundreds-of-pubs-to-flout-smoking-ban.html |archive-date = 13 July 2009}} </ref> The impact of the ban was mixed, with some pubs suffering declining sales, and others seeing an increase, particularly in food sales.<ref>{{cite magazine|url=http://www.thepublican.com/story.asp?sectioncode=14&storycode=64286&c=1 |title=Smoking out the truth on the ban β two years on|date=25 June 2009|first=James|last=Wilmore|magazine=The Publican|url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110717023101/http://www.thepublican.com/story.asp?sectioncode=14&storycode=64286&c=1 |archive-date=17 July 2011 }} </ref><ref> {{cite news |url = https://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUSLF6538620090715 |title = UPDATE 3-Wetherspoon sees FY profit at top end of forecasts |work = Reuters |access-date = 21 July 2009 |date = 15 July 2009 |url-status = live |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20090718190308/http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUSLF6538620090715 |archive-date = 18 July 2009}} </ref>
