There is some evidence that Paul I was venerated as a saint among the Russian Orthodox populace,<ref>Zhevakhov, Prince N. D. (1993) Reminiscences, V.2, p.273. Moscow.</ref> even though he was never officially canonized by any of the Orthodox Churches.

It won the [[Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay|Best Writing]] Oscar at the [[2nd Academy Awards]]. It is now mostly [[lost film|lost]], with about one-third of the film preserved in archives.

The film portrays Paul more compassionately than the long-existing stories about him.
