In 1994, producer Diana Botsford sued Schell for sexual harassment, after he allegedly propositioned her and tried to fondle her while they were working together on a television movie she was an associate producer on. In 2023, his niece Marie Theres Relin (daughter of [[Maria Schell]]), wrote in a book that she was abused and lost her virginity to an "uncle" in 1980, when she was 14.
