Follett became involved, during the late 1970s, in the activities of Britain's [[Labour Party (UK)|Labour Party]]. In the course of his political activities, he met [[Barbara Follett (politician)|Barbara Broer]], a Labour Party official, who became his second wife in 1984. She was elected as a Member of [[Parliament of the United Kingdom|Parliament]] in 1997, representing Stevenage. During university, Follett rebelled against his parents' "puritanical faith" and became an atheist.
