==Unification== In 1799, the 14th Tuokinai Kanokupolu, Tukuokinaaho was murdered, which sent Tonga into a civil war for fifty years. Finally, the islands were united into a Polynesian kingdom in 1845 by the ambitious young warrior, strategist, and orator Tāufaʻāhau. He held the chiefly title of Tu'i Kanokupolu, but was baptised with the name King George Tupou I. In 1875, with the help of missionary Shirley Baker, he declared Tonga a constitutional monarchy, at which time he emancipated the serfs, enshrined a code of law, land tenure, and freedom of the press, and limited the power of the chiefs. The islands were not fully surveyed until 1898, when the British warships Egeria and Penguin completed the task. <gallery> File:TWI TONGAN YOUNG WOMEN.jpg|Two Tongan young women, 1823 File:Training-School at Tonga (June 1852, p.60, IX) - Copy.jpg|Training School at Tonga, 1852 File:King George, of the Friendly Islands (1852, p.1, IX) - Copy.jpg|King George Tupou I of the Friendly Islands, 1852 File:Ata, a Tonga Chief (December 1853, X, p.132).jpg|Ata, a Tonga Chief, 1853 File:Durand-brager-119.png|Siege of a Tongan village during the expedition of Dumont d'Urville, 1863 File:The uncivilized races of men in all countries of the world; being a comprehensive account of their manners and customs, and of their physical, social, mental, moral and religious characteristics.
