No party had won the county more than three times in a row (aside from a brief Republican streak from 1916-1928), but the county has swung sharply to the right in the 21st century. The county gave Barack Obama a majority of the votes in 2008, but went back to Republican hands in 2012, and has continued to swing further right since, with [[Donald Trump]] becoming the first candidate in history to gain over 70% of the vote in 2024. Hancock County is still relatively swingy socially, having voted in favor of abortion<ref>{{Cite news |date=2022-11-08 |title=Kentucky Constitutional Amendment 2 Election Results: No Right to Abortion |url=https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/11/08/us/elections/results-kentucky-constitutional-amendment-2-no-right-to-abortion.html |access-date=2025-02-26 |work=The New York Times |language=en-US |issn=0362-4331}}</ref> and legalizing medical marijuana.<ref>{{Cite news |date=2024-11-05 |title=Live 2024 Election results in Hancock County |url=https://www.tristatehomepage.com/news/local-news/live-2024-election-results-in-hancock-county/ |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20241110220811/https://www.tristatehomepage.com/news/local-news/live-2024-election-results-in-hancock-county/ |archive-date=2024-11-10 |access-date=2025-02-26 |work=Eyewitness News (WEHT/WTVW) |language=en-US}}</ref> Like most counties in Kentucky, Hancock County is much more competitive at the local level due to Kentucky's high number of conservative Democrats and Kentucky's previously Democratic history.
