In 1970, the year that Borlaug won the Nobel Peace Prize, foundation officials proposed a worldwide network of agricultural research centers under a permanent secretariat. This was further supported and developed by the [[World Bank]]; on 19 May 1971, the [[CGIAR|Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research]] (CGIAR) was established, co-sponsored by the [[Food and Agriculture Organization|FAO]], [[International Fund for Agricultural Development|IFAD]], and [[United Nations Development Programme|UNDP]]. CGIAR has added many research centers throughout the world.{{fact|date=March 2025}}

CGIAR has responded, at least in part, to criticisms of Green Revolution methodologies.
