The city of Granada sits on the [[Vega de Granada]], one of the depressions or plains located within the [[Baetic System|Baetic mountain ranges]], continued to the west by those of Archidona and [[Hoya of Antequera|Antequera]] and to the East by those of [[Hoya of Guadix|Guadix]], [[Hoya of Baza|Baza]] and Huéscar.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Menor Toribio |title=Transformaciones recientes en la organización territorial de la Vega de Granada: del espacio agrario tradicional a la aglomeración urbana actual |journal=Estudios Regionales |issue=48 |year=1997 |issn=0213-7585 |pages=190–191 }}</ref>

The fertile soil of the Vega, apt for agriculture, is irrigated by the water streams originated in [[Sierra Nevada (Spain)|Sierra Nevada]], as well as minor secondary ranges, all drained by the catchment basin of the [[Genil River]],{{Sfn|Menor Toribio|1997|p=192}} that cuts across the city centre following an east to west direction. The [[Monachil (river)|Monachil]], a left-bank tributary of the former, also passes through the city, discharging into the Genil to the west of the city centre.
