The president is the [[head of state]] and elected by [[Direct election|popular vote]] every five years for a five-year term, and may not serve consecutive terms.<ref name=CIA>{{cite web|author=Central Intelligence Agency|title=The World Factbook: Haiti|url=https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/haiti/|date=31 October 2013 |access-date=2 December 2013}}</ref> The last presidential election was held on 20 November 2016.<ref name=CIA/> The latest president was [[Jovenel Moïse]] until his [[Assassination of Jovenel Moïse|assassination]] on 7 July 2021.

The president appoints the prime minister and his cabinet, which must be ratified by the National Assembly.
