He was diagnosed with a rare form of [[poliomyelitis]], although according to his son, [[Maxim Shostakovich|Maxim]], he was informed that it was [[motor neurone disease]].{{sfn|Fairclough|2019|pp=112β113}} Nevertheless, Shostakovich insisted upon writing all his own correspondence and music, even when his right hand became virtually unusable.
