In 1989, Firth began a relationship with [[Meg Tilly]], his co-star in ''Valmont''. During the filming of ''Pride and Prejudice'', Firth and co-star [[Jennifer Ehle]] began a romantic relationship, which received media attention only after their separation.<ref name="twice_shy" />

Firth was a vocal opponent of the [[Brexit]] initiative for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union.
