At the age of 25, Bernard founded the [[Clairvaux Abbey|Abbey of Clairvaux]] with twelve other monks.<ref name="Read93-95">Read, p 93, 95</ref> At this time, Cîteaux had four daughter houses: [[Pontigny Abbey|Pontigny]], [[Morimond Abbey|Morimond]], La Ferté and Clairvaux.
