He refused to participate in the [[Schmalkaldic League|Schmalkaldic War]] of 1546, and mediated between the Emperor and [[Saxony]] after the fall of [[Maurice of Saxony]] at the [[Battle of Sievershausen]] in 1553.{{sfn|Bain|1911}} In 1549, he began the building of [[Landskrona Citadel]].<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.landskronahistoria.se/kuriosa/landskrona_citadell_och_krigshistoria/landskrona_citadell_och_krigshistoria_12.html |title=Landskrona citadell |publisher=landskronahistoria.se |access-date=June 1, 2018}}</ref> He also rebuilt [[Sønderborg Castle]], converting it from a fortress into a four-winged castle in the new [[Renaissance architecture|Renaissance syle]], between 1549 and 1557.<ref>Otto Norn, Jørgen Paulsen and Jørgen Slettebo, ''Sønderborg Slot. Gad forlag, 1963.</ref> In February 1555, he interceded successfully on the behalf of the English Bible translator and Bishop of Exeter, [[Miles Coverdale]] (1488–1569), who had been imprisoned for two and a half years by the Catholic [[Mary I of England|Mary I]].
