==== Style of address ==== Scottish barons style their surnames similarly to Clan Chiefs if they own the caput, with the name of their barony following their name, as in ''John Smith of Edinburgh, Baron of Edinburgh'' otherwise ''John Smith, Baron of Edinburgh''.<ref>{{cite web | url = http://www.peerage.org/genealogy/Baronies.htm#Forms_of_address | title = Forms of Address | first = Graham | last = Senior-Milne | date = 27 June 2005 | work = The Feudal Baronies of Scotland | access-date = 13 March 2017 | archive-date = 7 December 2016 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20161207105248/http://www.peerage.org/genealogy/Baronies.htm#Forms_of_address | url-status = dead }}</ref><ref>{{cite web | url = http://www.scotsbarons.org/titles_and_usages.htm | title = Titles and Usages | work = The Convention of The Baronage of Scotland | access-date = 13 March 2017 | url-status = dead | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20150225165126/http://www.scotsbarons.org/titles_and_usages.htm | archive-date = 25 February 2015 | df = dmy-all }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.debretts.com/forms-of-address/titles/scottish--and-irish-titles/scottish-feudal-baronies.aspx|publisher=Debrett's|title=Forms of Address β Scottish Feudal Baronies|access-date=10 August 2013|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130725234418/http://www.debretts.com/forms-of-address/titles/scottish--and-irish-titles/scottish-feudal-baronies.aspx|archive-date=25 July 2013|df=dmy-all}}</ref> Most formally, and in writing, they are styled as ''[[The Much Honoured]] Baron of Edinburgh''. Their wives are styled ''Lady Edinburgh'', or ''The Baroness of Edinburgh''. The phrase ''Lady of Edinburgh'' is wrong if the lady in question does not hold a Scottish barony in her own right. Orally, Scottish barons may be addressed with the name of their barony, as in ''Edinburgh'' or else as ''Baron'' without anything else following, which if present would suggest a peerage barony. Informally, when referring to a Scots baron in the third person, the name ''Baron of [X]'' is used or simply ''[X]''. Scottish Barons may record ''[surname] of [territorial designation]'' in the surname field of their passport, and an official observation would then note that ''The holder is [given names] [surname] Baron of [territorial designation]''; applicants must provide evidence that the Lord Lyon has recognised their feudal barony, or else be included in Burke's Peerage.<ref>{{citation | url = https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/118548/titles-included-in-passports.pdf | title = Titles included in passports | author = HM Passport Office | author-link = HM Passport Office | date = 13 January 2012 | website = GOV.UK | publisher = HM Government | access-date = 13 March 2017 | archive-date = 25 June 2014 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140625141551/https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/118548/titles-included-in-passports.pdf | url-status = live }}</ref><ref>{{cite web | url = https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/118562/observations-passports.pdf | title = Observations in passports | author = HM Passport Office | author-link = HM Passport Office | date = 7 February 2012 | website = GOV.UK | publisher = HM Government | access-date = 12 January 2018 | archive-date = 10 March 2017 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20170310063426/https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/118562/observations-passports.pdf | url-status = dead }}</ref>
