Two samples collected from home wells around this drainage tested positive for ''Vibrio cholerae''.]] ''V. cholerae'' infects the intestine and causes diarrhea, the hallmark symptom of cholera. Infection can be spread by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water.<ref name="ReferenceA">{{Cite web|url=https://www.cdc.gov/cholera/illness.html|title=Illness & Symptoms {{!}} Cholera|date=2018-12-13|website=CDC|language=en-us|access-date=2019-11-12|archive-date=2019-11-12|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191112021632/https://www.cdc.gov/cholera/illness.html|url-status=live}}</ref> It also can spread through skin contact with contaminated human feces. Not all infection indicate symptoms, only about 1 in 10 people develop diarrhea. The major symptoms include: watery diarrhea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, loss of skin elasticity, low blood pressure, thirst, and muscle cramps.<ref name="ReferenceA"/> This illness can get serious as it can progress to kidney failure and possible coma. If diagnosed, it can be treated using medications.<ref name="ReferenceA"/>
