==== Honors program ==== The honors program, first created in 1963 by Academic Vice President William Kelly, stresses independent work and individualized engagement with faculty.<ref name=":31" /> The program gives students the opportunity to pursue their research interests through one-on-one tutorials with professors and culminating in a year-long thesis project.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://digitalservices.scranton.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/prpubs/id/4027/rec/1 |title=Press Release: Honors Program Enables Students To Pursue Independent Study |date=11 May 1999 |website=University of Scranton Archives & Helen Gallagher McHugh Special Collections |publisher=University of Scranton Office of Public Relations |access-date=11 May 2017}}</ref> Honors Students must take one course, between three and five tutorials, two seminars and the final 6-credit project. Honors courses count toward general education requirements and the tutorials count toward major, minor, cognate or general education requirements.<ref name=":28">{{Cite web |url=http://www.scranton.edu/academics/honors-program.shtml |title=Honors Program |date=2017 |website=The University of Scranton |publisher=University of Scranton |access-date=11 May 2017}}</ref> Students can apply to the Honors Program in the fall of their sophomore year. Because a minimum of a 3.5 [[Grading (education)|GPA]] is required for graduation in the Honors Program, applicants must have at least a 3.3 GPA to be considered. Admission is also based on the applicant's high school and college records, [[SAT|SAT scores]], application, recommendations, and interviews. Normally around 50 students are accepted into the program.<ref name=":28" />
