G. Wodehouse]]'s ''[[Blandings Castle]]'' stories, playing Beach, the butler, to [[Ralph Richardson]]'s Lord Emsworth.<ref name=times/> His portrayal of Beach was received with critical reservation, but the series was a popular success.{{#tag:ref|The critic of ''The Observer'' wrote, "rather far from my conception of Beach. ... The original Beach is rotund and pompous with an overwhelming consciousness of his own superiority."<ref>Richardson, Maurice.
