==Aviation History==
Portlaoise is the birthplace of aviation in Ireland. The first aeroplane made in Ireland was assembled in the town by Frank & Louis Aldritt, William Rogers & John Conroy, and made its first flight as reported in the King's County Chronicle on 4 November 1909.<ref name=FiI>{{cite web|url=https://flyinginireland.com/2019/03/the-portlaoise-plane/|title=The Portlaoise Plane|first=Mark|last=Dwyer|work=Flying in Ireland|date=27 March 2019|accessdate=22 May 2023}}{{unreliable source?|date=May 2023|reason=Blog site with no evidence of editorial oversight}}</ref> Put in storage during the [[World War I]], it remained in storage until it was discovered over 50 years later in an English museum by Joe Rogers, son of William Rogers, one of the original builders of the aircraft. It was eventually brought back to Portlaoise where it has been restored.<ref name=FiI/>
