The lake is the centerpiece of the [[North Platte National Wildlife Refuge]].

On August 21, 2017, a [[Solar eclipse of August 21, 2017|total solar eclipse]] passed over most of the [[Nebraska Panhandle]], including the town of Minatare. Visitors flocked to the area to see the eclipse.
