Max von Sydow married actress Christina Inga Britta Olin in 1951. They had two sons. The couple divorced in 1979.<ref name=LATimesObit/> Von Sydow married French documentarian Catherine Brelet in 1997 and adopted Brelet's two adult sons from her previous marriage.<ref name=LATimesObit/><ref name=GuardianObit/>

Sydow relocated to Paris following his marriage to Brelet. When Rose asked Sydow if he had heard from Bergman, he replied that he had but chose not to elaborate further on the exact meaning of this statement.
