==Trends== Between 2005 and 2013, the overall rate of mastectomy increased 36 percent, from 66 to 90 per 100,000 adult women. The rate of hospital-based bilateral mastectomies (inpatient and outpatient combined) more than tripled, from 9.1 to 29.7 per 100,000 adult women, whereas the rate of unilateral mastectomies remained relatively stable at around 60 per 100,000 women. From 2005 to 2013, the rate of bilateral outpatient mastectomies increased more than fivefold and the inpatient rate nearly tripled. The rate of unilateral mastectomies nearly doubled in the outpatient setting but decreased 28 percent in the inpatient setting. By 2013, nearly half of all mastectomies were performed outpatient.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Steiner|first1=C.A.|last2=Weiss|first2=A.J.|last3=Barrett|first3=M.L.|last4=Fingar|first4=K.R.|last5=Davis|first5=P.H|title=Trends in Bilateral and Unilateral Mastectomies in Hospital Inpatient and Ambulatory Settings, 2005β2013|journal=HCUP Statistical Brief |issue=201|date=2016|pages=1β14|pmid=27253008 |url=http://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/reports/statbriefs/sb201-Mastectomies-Inpatient-Outpatient.pdf |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/archive/20221009/http://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/reports/statbriefs/sb201-Mastectomies-Inpatient-Outpatient.pdf |archive-date=2022-10-09 |url-status=live|access-date=7 March 2016}}</ref> However, there are concerns that these rising rates of mastectomies are most greatly seen in women with node-negative and noninvasive lesions, which are subsets of patients that do not require mastectomy.<ref name=":8">{{Cite journal |last=Rosenberg |first=Karen |date=February 2015 |title=Mastectomy Rates Rising in Women who Don't Require Mastectomy |url=https://journals.lww.com/ajnonline/Abstract/2015/02000/Mastectomy_Rates_Rising_in_Women_who_Don_t_Require.25.aspx#:~:text=A%20total%20of%2035.5%25%20of,%25,%20most%20notably%20after%202006 |journal=American Journal of Nursing |language=en-US |volume=115 |issue=2 |pages=56 |doi=10.1097/01.NAJ.0000460695.32758.92 |s2cid=72073372 |issn=0002-936X}}</ref>
