===Rosh Chodesh—The New Month===

Rosh Chodesh ({{langx|he|ראש חודש|roš ḥoḏeš|head of the month}}) is a minor holiday or observance occurring on the first day of each month of the Jewish calendar, as well as the last day of the preceding month if it has thirty days.
* Rosh Chodesh observance during at least a portion of the period of the [[Nevi'im]] could be fairly elaborate. See, for example, [[1 Samuel 20]]
*Over time there have been varying levels of observance of a custom that women are excused from certain types of work, as in [[Megillah (Talmud)|Megilla]] 22b:4: "the days of the New Moon, when it is customary for women to refrain from work".
* Fasting is normally prohibited on Rosh Chodesh.
Beyond the preceding, current observance is limited to [[Rosh Chodesh#Traditional observances|changes in liturgy]].
